Hyde & Albemarle Correctional Institute Roof Assessments
North Carolina Department of Adult Correction | Swan Quarter, NC (Hyde) and New London, NC (Albemarle)
PROJECT DETAILS
The roofs assessed at Hyde Correctional Institute included an Admin Building, a Housing Building, a Vocational Building, and a Gatehouse. The existing roofs were typically gravel built-up roofs with light-weight concrete fill on a concrete core plank deck. The vocational building had a gravel surface built-up roof on rigid insulation and a metal deck. The roofs assessed at Albemarle Correctional Institute included an Admin Building, three identical housing buildings, and a Gatehouse. The existing roofs were typically ballasted EPDM roofs with light-weight concrete fill on a concrete core plank deck. One area of the Admin Building was a ballasted EPDM on rigid insulation and a gypsum thermal barrier on a metal deck. Both Institutes have had a history of leaks at the buildings including in the assessment, however, Albemarle, particularly the Admin Building, was having the most severe leaks. The staff at the facility indicated areas or interior finishes that are damaged during any rain event that occurs at the facility. As a result of the assessments, Atlas determined that the roofs at the Albemarle Correctional Institute were in worse condition and needed full-depth replacement earlier than the roofs at Hyde Correctional Institute. Atlas is currently designing repairs to prolong the service life of the roofs at Hyde Correction Institute while NCDAC plans to have a roof replacement project at Albemarle Correctional Institute.
